FREE workshop on planting native carbon forests in
Bellingen!
Join Blacktown City Council in Bellingen from 9.30am to
4.00pm on Wednesday, 13 June 2012 for a
FREE Plan A Regenesis Forest workshop.
The workshop is for the benefit of landowners, local councils, employees of the Catchment Management Authority,
members of Landcare group, and other Non Government Organisation members, who
are interested in planting a locally native forest that can be used for
biodiversity enhancement, habitat expansion, stock shelter, a windbreak or soil
salinity reduction. The workshop also provides information on how people can
earn income through carbon trading.
Blacktown City Council will host the
workshop, having carried out a very successful Regenesis project in partnership
with Liverpool Plains Shire Council during 2008-2011. The project saw the planting of more than 222,000 native plants across 100 hectares of land and
established over 30 native carbon forests, on less productive areas of privately
owned farmland, Council-owned land and NSW Crown land.
Regenesis was made possible through a $2
million grant from the NSW Government through its Environmental Trust, and became a model for planning and planting locally native
reforestation projects that can create revenue for landholders through carbon
trading.
Rural landowners know the value of planting
native trees for stock shelter and wind breaks and to reduce soil salinity and
enhance habitat. The Regenesis workshop will
help participants understand the additional considerations needed to establish
native carbon forests and develop an income stream from carbon trading. The workshop comes at a critical time, enabling
people to understand how they might utilise the Federal Government’s Carbon
Farming Initiative in practical ways.
During the free workshop, the Regenesis
project staff will share their revegetation and carbon farming knowledge and
skills.
Experienced presenters will demystify carbon farming and offer mentoring
and advice as participants look to establish forests on their own land.
So join this special workshop to learn more about the Regenesis model,
walk through the steps needed to plan a native carbon forest and learn how to
register your forest for carbon trading purposes.

Bellingen Shire Council and the Our Living Coast Alliance are pleased to announce the launch of the brand new Carpool Mid North Coast website project. Like all the best ideas, Carpool Mid North Coast is very simple. The free, easy to use website helps match members with people taking the same journey, whether regularly or occasionally, and they share a vehicle which cuts the environmental and travel costs. It’s a win-win all round. The Carpool scheme includes a secure, free, carpool website, member car stickers and branded road signs which will identify the Pick Up and Set Down locations. Priority car parking spaces for cars in the Carpool will be identified in each council area by branded marking. A pilot scheme launched in 2009 in the Northern Rivers region has already proved highly successful.

Introduction to Bio-Dynamics Workshop Friday 27 April at Brierfield
Susan will be hosting the workshop at Brierfield Farm and makes the following comments:
"Last year I was fortunate enough to do the introduction bio dynamic workshop ...which blew my mind. As a result of that I am 'quietly committed to turning Bellingen into a bio dynamic town one person/farm at a time.......the community gardens is now under way as are a few farmers in the area and now hopefully some of you will join in and see what all the fuss is about.
It has completely changed the way I garden, relate to gardening and has added a another dimension to the way I see and do things period.
We are also incredibly lucky to have access to the Biodynamic Agriculture Association of Australia here in Bellingen which means we have access to the preps, info, help and learning...on tap! see Biodynamic AAA
They are an awesome bunch of people with years of knowledge and expertise.....and endless generosity of spirit. Enough said, they are running four workshops over the next few months......they rarely run so many here in Bellingen and its part of their committment to creating a bigger presence here where it is utilised more by the community....below is the course outline and hopefully it will have a similar affect on you."

Claire has just completed the Gunuuwa Independent Wilderness Studies Program, exploring her inner wilderness as much as the forest around her. A fascinating article about her experiences appeared in the spring 2011 edition of Australian Geographic. She will bring her passion for earth-skills, contemplative work in nature and social change to this event.

Bellingen is home to an incredible diversity of birds and, unlike in dense forest, viewing conditions are often ideal. Local poet and birdo Brian Hawkins will lead this walk through the streets of Bellingen, pointing out birds and speaking poetry – his own as well as some of the greatest bird poems ever written. There will be some overlap with Walk One (Friday at the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre), but also some new material: the two walks can be enjoyed together or in isolation.
